the literary cat

Riley cat inspired a first attempt at a homophonic poem.

Riley is a literary cat,
the kind that likes tall tales.
He can write one out in a jiff
with his right paw and tail.

The stories that he likes to tell
are at least ten stories high,
of mice that sing and dogs that dance
And birds that cannot fly.

Once he penned while in his pen
eight poems while eating steak.
With much at stake, he penned four more
to pay for the steak he ate.

to be continued....

the grass is greener, the food sweeter

My cat taught me a (another) little object lesson yesterday. He was hungry, prancing around my feet, "mrow"....so I filled up his bowl. He ate one bite and then went into the kitchen and starting trying to open one of the cabinets. "Weird!" Somehow he managed to get the door open. I went over to extract him from the cabinet, and I found the extra bag of cat food torn open and almost gone. The exact same kind of food that was in his bowl...

The question(s): Why do we always want the thing now that is intended for later? Hasn't God already given me exactly what I need today? Is it not enough? Why am I not content? Why do I always think that what I don't have is better than what I do have?

My cat made me think of Israel wandering in the desert. When they didn't have food, they grumbled to God, "Are you going to let us die here?" God provided manna. Later on, they grumbled again "But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!"

"It seems to me that we often, almost sulkily, reject the good that God offers us because, at the moment, we expected some other good." C.S. Lewis

LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.-- Psalm 16:5-6

He is enough!

Riley's Big Day

Riley is having a special visit to the vet today.

He has had a rough week.....on Wendesday, he had his first bath after coming home caked in mud. He was probably in a fight. The vet called him a thug.

To Riley!

lessons from my cat

Everyday when I arrive home from school, Riley greets me at the door with his friendly, "mrow." As I put my things down, he prances around my feet and continues his, "mrow, mrow," but now, it is not so much friendly as it is a little demanding.

I sit down to read my mail, and he decides it would be fun to put his claws in my pants....."RILEY!!!" I fuss at him and walk over to pour some food in his bowl....surely, he is just hungry, now he will leave me alone!

He eats a few bites, but as I walk away, he follows me, still prancing around my feet, sometimes almost tripping me.

"Riley! I gave you food! What's the problem?"

Finally, I pick him up and pet him for a few minutes. He purrs contentedly. When I put him down he goes and eats his food and plays for a while.

He didn't want food....he wanted me...If only I would come more often to my Father's presence desiring Him, and not just the things I want or need!

bad kitty!

The other night I was grading some papers when I heard something that suspiciously sounded like a cat in a trashcan. I got up and walked over to find Riley, with his hiney sticking up in the air and his nose in the garbage. As I prepared myself to scold him, he popped his head up......except, I couldn't actually see his head because it was stuck in a sour cream container. I had to laugh! I will save the scolding for the next time and perhaps learn to take out the trash a little sooner.

ode to padme

one day
she went away
without a coat
without a note
into the cold
she was quite bold
to leave from home
now free to roam
i miss her purr
and her soft fur
kitty cat!
please come back
unless, of course,
you're some dog's snack...

coffee + cat = ?????

So, my cat Louie officially likes coffee. At first I thought that she would just stick her nose in, get a taste, and run away.....NO! She keeps coming back for more! I put her on the floor, and she jumps up again.

Ok, I just put a book over the coffee to keep her out and now she is trying to knock it off. Not only has Starbucks taken over the human world, but next thing you know, they will be marketing to our pets.

Gross! I think she has coffee breath.

Oops...name change!

So, Louie is actually a girl! How does that always happen? We have decided to leave her name as Louie, but we are calling her Lu Lu. She sure is cute!
